DESCRIPTION:

Lautrec began producing graphics at a time when his mastery of drawing had reached its peak and he could experiment on the stone as he wished. This was the first limited edition of a print by Lautrec. The artist has portrayed one of the star dancers of the Moulin Rouge, Louise Weber, known as La Goulue (1870-1929). It was published by the art-dealers Boussod, Valadon et Cie., where Lautrec’s old friend and later biographer, Maurice Joyant, was manager. As early as July the artist claimed to be so far highly satisfied with the results of his experiments in the field of color lithography: ‘My little efforts have turned out perfectly and I’ve caught onto something which can lead me quite far—so I hope’ (Goldschmidt-Schimmel, No. 145).
