Andres Serrano (américain, né le 15 août 1950 à New York) est un artiste conceptuel célèbre pour ses œuvres controversées et provocantes. Après avoir étudié à la Brooklyn Museum Art School de 1967 à 1969, Serrano se fait remarquer grâce à ses photographies, alliant beauté et vulgarité. Travaillant majoritairement en grand format et sans manipulation numérique, Serrano laisse le sujet de ses clichés parler et choquer à sa place. Sans doute surtout connu pour son œuvre intitulée Piss Christ (1987), photographie d’un crucifix plongé dans ce qui est censé être la propre urine de l’artiste, Serrano reçoit des réactions négatives de la part de leaders religieux, d’activistes conservateurs, jusqu’aux célèbres sénateurs qui protestent contre sa bourse accordée par le National Endowment of the Arts. Cependant, nombreux sont les défenseurs de son droit à la liberté d’expression et Serrano continue de créer des œuvres qui explorent des thèmes difficiles tels que la violence, la race et la pauvreté.

Parmi ses autres œuvres célèbres, on compte Objects of Desire, série du début des années 1990 représentant des armes à feu, The Morgue, décrivant des victimes de crimes violents et America qui explore les nombreuses significations de l’expression « être Américain ». Le travail de Serrano est exposé dans des musées à travers le monde, dont le Museum of Contemporary Art de Chicago et la galerie Corcoran de Washington, D.C., et il figure sur des couvertures d’albums de groupe de heavy metal comme Metallica. Serrano explore également le domaine de la musique, enregistre un album et réalise une série de vidéos sous le pseudonyme de Brutus Faust. Des expositions solo de son travail ont lieu dans le monde entier et il est représenté à New York et Paris par la galerie Yvon Lambert.
