Chuck Close (américain, né le 5 juillet 1940 à Monroe dans l’État de Washington) est connu pour ses portraits hyperréalistes à très grande échelle composés de minuscules couches d’aérographes, d’empreintes digitales ou de multiples coups de pinceaux multicolores répétés en boucle. En 1962, Close reçoit son Bachelor of Arts de l’Université de Washington à Seattle, puis son Master of Fine Arts de l’université de Yale en 1964. Trois ans plus tard, il déménage à New York, où il devient l’un des fondateurs de la peinture photoréaliste, travaillant d’abord en noir et blanc avant de passer aux peintures colorées, lumineuses presque abstraites.

Close réalise systématiquement ses peintures en forme de grille, souvent visible une fois le travail achevé ; ses plus récentes œuvres mêlent sa grille méthodique aux coups de pinceaux spontanés des artistes expressionnistes abstraits. Les modèles de ses portraits sont habituellement sa famille et ses amis, tels que Richard Serra, Cindy Sherman, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein et Robert Rauschenberg. Son travail est hautement apprécié et exposé, entre autres, au MoMA et au P.S.1 de New York, au Centre Pompidou à Paris et à la Tate Modern de Londres. En 1988, Close souffre d’une rare lésion de la moëlle épinière, qu’il appelle The Event, et qui le force à peindre dans une chaise roulante. Malgré cela, il reste une figure importante de la scène artistique internationale.
