Damien Hirst (anglais, né à Bristol en Angleterre) est un des leaders des Young British Artists, désignant un ensemble d’artistes contemporains britanniques, regroupant des artistes comme Fiona Rae, Liam Gillick, Sarah Lucas, Ian Davenport, Michael Landy, entre autres. Lauréat du Prix Turner en 1995, il devient à partir de 2009 l’artiste le plus riche de l’histoire. Il devient célèbre après le succès rencontré par deux expositions organisées dans des entrepôts qui présentent à la fois des œuvres de ses amis et les siennes. Lors de la seconde exposition, le directeur de la publicité Charles Saatchi fait l’acquisition de l’œuvre de Hirst intitulée A Thousand Years, une boîte en verre renfermant une tête de vache en décomposition et infestée de mouches. Saatchi fait la promotion de Hirst et des Young British Artists pendant plusieurs années jusqu’à la fin de leur relation en 2003.

Le travail de Hirst suscite une grande controverse en grande partie à cause de la morbidité de ses œuvres et de sa fascination pour la médecine, prédominantes dans plusieurs de ses séries : des cadavres d’animaux emballés dans différents états de conservation, l’incorporation d’ailes de papillon dans des vitraux, des armoires remplies de produits pharmaceutiques et des crânes incrustés de diamants. Hirst est entouré d’une équipe d’assistants qui l’aident à mener à bien ses projets ; ses séries Spot Paintings et Spin Paintings sont d’ailleurs presque entièrement dues au travail de ses assistants. Dans les années 1990, Hirst devient un personnage connu du public en se donnant en spectacle sous l’emprise de l’alcool et de la drogue, qu’il a depuis arrêtés de consommer. Récemment, du 4 avril au 9 septembre 2012, les œuvres d’Hirst ont été exposées a la Tate Modern de Londres et ses spot paintings ont fait partie d’une exposition mondiale, The Complete Sport Paintings 1986–2011 organisée par la galerie Gagosian, simultanément dans onze de ses galeries, du 12 janvier au 18 février 2012.
