Edward Burtynsky  (Canadian, 1955)

Edward Burtynsky (canadien, né le 22 février 1955 à Saint Catharines) est un photographe surtout connu pour ses représentations de la nature altérée par l’industrie. Né dans l’Ontario, il grandit près d’une usine General Motors, une expérience qui suscite son intérêt pour les photographies de paysages industriels, comme la production pétrolière, les mines et les carrières. Burtynsky étudie la photographie à l’université Ryerson de Toronto et cite en guise de premières référence des photographes comme Ansel Adams (américain, 1902-1984), Edward Weston (américain, 1886-1958) et Eadweard Muybridge (américano-britannique, 1830-1904).

La signature technique de Burtynsky implique un appareil-photo à grand format et des plateformes surélevées pour capturer des vues panoramiques dans les moindres détails. Ses séries Mines (1983), Quarries (1991) et Australia (2007) évoquent à la fois un sentiment d’attirance et de répulsion et rappellent les conséquences de la consommation et des transports des temps modernes. Au début des années 2000, Burtynsky voyage en Chine pour se documenter sur l’industrie urbaine, notamment le développement du barrage des Trois-Gorges, le plus grand barrage hydroélectrique au monde. Dans sa série la plus récente, Water (2010), Burtynsky prend des photographies aériennes de la marée noire dans le golfe du Mexique. Burtynsky reçoit le prix TED et le prix Dialogue de l’Humanité aux Rencontres d’Arles en 2004. En 2006, il est fait Officier de l’Ordre du Canada. Burtynsky organise des expositions solo, entre autres, à la galerie Corcoran de Washington, D.C. et à la National Gallery du Canada. Actuellement, son travail figure parmi des collections de plusieurs musées, notamment la Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, le Reina Sofia Museum de Madrid et le MoMA de New York. Il vit et travaille à Toronto.
