Born to German immigrant parents in Pennsgrove, NJ

The Hennings family relocated to Chicago and Martin spent much of his youth there, eventually studying at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Studied at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany for over two years before the onset of World War I, at which time he was forced to return home.

Moved to Taos permanently
