Francesca Woodman (américaine, née le 13 avril 1958 à Denver – morte le 19 janvier 1981 à New York) est une photographe célèbre pour ses clichés en noir et blanc dans lesquels elle pose avec d’autres mannequins. Ses parents sont les artistes George Woodman (américain, né en 1932) et Betty Woodman (américaine, née en 1930). Elle fréquente une école privée et c’est à cette époque qu’elle commence à développer ses compétences artistiques photographiques. Woodman passe ses étés avec sa famille en Italie. En 1975, Woodman commence à étudier à l’école de Design de Rhode Island à Providence. Deux ans plus tard, elle se rend à Rome dans le cadre d’un programme d’une bourse d’études. Elle retourne aux États-Unis en 1978 et obtient son diplôme à l’école de Rhode Island. L’année suivante, Woodman s’installe à New York pour poursuivre une carrière dans la photographie.

Plus de 800 tirages sont réalisés par Woodman durant sa vie, la plupart d’entre eux n’ont pas de titre. Beaucoup de ses œuvres sont alors connues grâce à leur date ou leur lieu. Bon nombre de ses photographies représentent des femmes nues et des images floues. Les mannequins que l’on peut voir sur ses photos fusionnent souvent avec leurs environnements. Leurs visages sont également souvent obscurcis. Les photos de Woodman sont influencées par une variété de facteurs comme la fiction gothique et le surréalisme et d’artistes tels que Man Ray (américain, 1890-1976) et Duane Michals (américaine, née en 1932). Parmi ses œuvres les plus connues figure Polka Dots dans laquelle elle apparaît portant une robe à pois.

En 1980, Woodman obtient une résidence à la McDowell Colony. Pendant cette période, elle continue à envoyer ses portfolios à des photographes, en vain. À la suite de quoi, elle tombe dans la dépression et tente de se suicider. Après cette tentative ratée, Woodman vit à New York avec ses parents. Pendant un certain temps, elle semble guérir de sa dépression. Woodman demande une subvention auprès du National Endowment for the Arts, qui sera plus tard rejetée. Le 19 janvier 1981 à l’âge de 22 ans, Woodman meurt en sautant d'une fenêtre. Sa succession est assurée par ses parents. La galerie Marian Goodman à New York représente plus de 800 tirages de Woodman.
