Fred Tomaselli (américain, né en 1956 à Santa Monica) est acclamé pour ses peintures de collages qui intègrent des matériaux non conventionnels et décrivent des scènes hallucinatoires et surréelles. Tomaselli grandit dans la culture de la drogue de la côte ouest des années 1970, avant de déménager à New York où il se plonge dans la communauté artistique de la ville. L’artiste cite le climat du New York des années 1980 comme source d’inspiration pour l’utilisation de matériaux inhabituels dans ses œuvres comme l’aspirine, les patches de nicotine, les feuilles de chanvre, les poudres hallucinogènes et les pilules. Alors que dans les années 1970, ces drogues sont une connexion vers des visions utopiques, dans les années 1980 Tomaselli observe ses amis prendre des drogues dans un paysage sombre, postmoderne et lié au Sida.

Il incorpore ces matériaux dans des œuvres chatoyantes et brillantes qui combinent une imagerie naturelle à des motifs et des environnements surréalistes, brouillant ainsi les lignes entre naturel et artificiel. Le travail de Tomaselli touche également le transcendantalisme, liant la philosophie du XIXe siècle centrée sur la métaphysique trouvée dans la nature à une vision contemporaine d’une recherche de sens spirituel. Il expose ses œuvres au centre d’art contemporain PS1 et au Whitney Museum of American Art de New York, à la Corcoran Gallery of Art de Washington, D.C., à la galerie White Cube de Londres et au musée d’art Mori de Tokyo. Tomaselli vit et travaille actuellement à Brooklyn.
