Le photographe Hiroshi Sugimoto (japonais, né le 23 février 1948 à Tokyo) est célèbre pour son exploration des propriétés illusoires de la photographie. Né au Japon, Sugimoto étudie tout d’abord la politique et la sociologie à l’université St. Paul de Tokyo, puis en 1970 il s’inscrit au Art Center College of Art and Design de Los Angeles pour étudier les beaux-arts. Il déménage ensuite à New York, où il s’impose comme photographe intéressé par la représentation de la réalité. Influencé par les techniques et esthétiques dadaïstes et surréalistes, Sugimoto photographie des cinémas et des opéras, des dioramas d’histoire naturelle et des mannequins de cire, utilisant de longues expositions pour créer des scènes étranges et un éclairage artificiel.

Sugimoto est également architecte ; il conçoit des espaces spécifiques pour ses expositions. Son intérêt pour l’architecture transparaît à travers ses nombreuses photographies de vieux bâtiments. Son travail est hautement apprécié et a été présenté, entre autres, au Met et au MoMA de New York ainsi qu’au Hara Museum of Contemporary Art de Tokyo. Il a également reçu des bourses de la fondation Guggenheim et du National Endowment for the Arts. Sugimoto partage actuellement son temps entre Tokyo et New York.
