James Turrell (américain, né le 6 mai 1943 à Los Angeles) est né en Californie dans une famille de quakers. À l’âge de 16 ans, Turrell obtient son permis de pilote et accomplit des missions pour apporter des fournitures aux sites miniers situés dans des régions éloignées. En 1961, l’artiste est diplômé de la Pasadena High School. Il obtient sa Licence en Psychologie au Pomona College en 1965 puis une Maîtrise en Arts à la Claremont Graduate School.

Turrell est célèbre pour son intérêt pour l’espace et la lumière dans son travail. En 1966, l’artiste commence à expérimenter la lumière à l’hôtel Mendota. Pendant cette période, un groupe de Los Angeles issu du mouvement Light and Space commence à devenir célèbre et comprend des artistes comme Doug Wheeler (américain, né en 1939) et Robert Irwin (américain, né en 1928).

Turrell reçoit de nombreux prix prestigieux tout au long de sa carrière. En 1974, l’artiste reçoit la bourse Guggenheim et en 1991 il est fait Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres en France. Le travail de Turrell est exposé dans de nombreuses expositions solo ou de groupes à travers le monde, entre autres, à la galerie Gagosian de Londres, au MoMA PS1 de New York et au Museum für Moderne Kunst de Francfort. Il vit et travaille actuellement à Flagstaff en Arizona.
