John Baldessari  (American, 1931)

Depuis le milieu des années 1950, l’artiste et professeur John Baldessari (américain, né le 17 juin 1931 à National City) mélange photographie, montage, peinture et textes pour créer des compositions complexes qui explorent les multiples facettes des interprétations de l’icônographie culturelle. Né en Californie, Baldessari est un défenseur de l’art de la côte ouest et en particulier des artistes émergents sortant des écoles d’art californiennes. Puisant son imagerie dans une quantité de sources, comme la publicité et les films, Baldessari bouleverse les associations visuelles communes en attirant l’attention sur les moindres détails, les juxtapositions absurdes et des portions d’images obscures ou fragmentées.

Il intègre également un élément pictural pour rappeler au spectateur que la main de l’artiste n’est pas seulement présente dans le placement des images mais aussi dans l’hybridation du processus créatif. En tant que personnalité importante de l’art conceptuel, le processus de Baldessari se concentre sur la perception et l’interprétation des éléments visuels et textuels, tout en utilisant l’ironie sur la façon dont les significations prennent forme. Le travail de Baldessari est exposé à travers le monde, entre autres, au musée Stedelijk à Amsterdam, au musée des arts contemporains à Houston, au Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía à Madrid, au MoMA et au musée Whitney à New York, aux documentas 4, 5 et 6 à Kassel en Allemagne. En 2009, John Baldessari: Pure Beauty, une importante rétrospective de son travail, ouvre ses portes à la Tate Modern à Londres avant de s’installer au County Museum of Art de Los Angeles, au Met de New York et au Museu d''''''''Art Contemporani de Barcelone en Espagne.
