John Scott was born in Morpeth, Northumberland in 1802, the son of bakery owners. Soon after his birth the young family moved to Sunderland, and in about 1820 to South Shields, where he was to spend the rest of his life. His early career was spent at sea, but in about 1834 he came ashore and became a grocer to support his wife of nine years and their expanding family. Changing his occupation from grocer to artist he almost certainly studied under the leading Tyneside artist of the day, John Wilson Carmichael (1799 1868). The Tyne provided a great variety of shipping for Scott to portray, from the brigs and snows of his early career to later barques, steamers and wherries, and even the tragedy of shipwrecks. Scott died in his adopted town at the age of 83 in 1885. Many of his paintings are in the collection of the Tyne and Wear museums as well as the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, the Mariners Museum of Newport News, Virginia, and the Peabody Museum of Salem, Massachusetts.
