Julie Mehretu (éthiopienne-américaine, née à Addis Abeba en 1970), graveuse et peintre abstraite, déménage dans le Michigan avec sa famille en 1977. Elle a commencé son éducation à l’université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, puis obtient une licence en arts à l’université Kalamazoo et une maîtrise en beaux-arts à la School of Art and Design de Rhode Island en 1997.

Mehretu vit et travaille à New York City depuis le début de sa carrière en 1999, elle a également un studio à Berlin qu’elle utilise une certaine partie de l’année. Elle réalise des gravures, des dessins et des peintures à grande échelle utilisant des multicouches pour créer l’imagerie abstraite à partir de modèles et de photographies architecturales. Des centaines de couches fines et translucides de peinture et de papier recouvrent chaque toile. Les critiques relient son travail aux mouvements de l’art non littéral allant du futurisme au constructivisme. Toutes ses œuvres, indépendamment du format, impliquent du symbolisme issu du graffiti, des cartes de villes et des graphiques de bandes dessinées. Des explosions et des lignes nettes ou arrondies sont des thèmes constants dans l’ensemble de son travail. Mehretu s’inspire des œuvres à grande échelle de Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) et Barnett Newman (1905-1970).

Mural, l’une de ses œuvres les plus connues, est une fresque de près de 25 m. située sur une tour de Goldman Sachs. Elle est visible depuis la rue et a été commandée par la firme bancaire en 2010. Sa peinture Untitled 1 est également populaire ; elle a été vendue plus d’un million de dollars chez Sotheby’s en 2010. Les dessins de Mehretu font partie de l’exposition Drawing Now: Eight Propositions in 2002, organisée au MoMA de New York. Le palais Grassi in Venice a également accueilli son travail lors de l’exposition Praise Of Doubt en 2011. Grey Area, sa première grande exposition solo, a lieu au musée Guggenheim de New York en 2010. Ses œuvres actuelles font partie de la collection permanente du MoMA. Mehretu est représentée par la galerie Marian Goodman à New York et White Cube à Londres. Elle reçoit le prix Berlin, une récompense de la Fondation MacArthur,et le prix d’Art Américain. Mehretu vit et travaille à New York et à Berlin.
