Kenneth Noland (américain, né le 10 avril 1924 à Asheville) est un peintre abstrait et un sculpteur, connu pour ses œuvres colorées simples utilisant des motifs comme les cibles, des chevrons, des rayures et des toiles de formes diverses. Né dans l’État de Caroline du Nord, Noland étudie au Black Mountain College avec le coloriste Josef Albers (germano-américain, 1888 – 1976).

Après sa première exposition solo à la galerie Creuze à Paris en 1949, Noland s’installe à Washington, D.C., où il enseigne à l’Institut d’art contemporain et devient ami avec l’artiste Morris Louis (américain, 1912 – 1962). Noland et Louis se rendent à New York et visitent le studio d’Helen Frankenthaler (américaine, 1928 – 2011), qui influencera les deux artistes et inspirera Noland pour travailler sur des cibles saturées dans des anneaux concentriques de couleur. Noland vit et travaille à New York au début des années 1960 et finit par enseigner au Bennington College dans le Vermont. Noland continue à expérimenter la couleur, devenant l’un des premiers à utiliser la forme des toiles dans ses œuvres. Il meurt en 1997 à l’âge de 85 ans.
