Liam Gillick (britannique, né en 1964 à Aylesbury en Angleterre) étudie au Goldsmiths College de Londres et obtient sa licence en beaux-arts en 1987. Sa première exposition solo a lieu deux ans plus tard. Pendant les années 1990, Gillick fait partie du groupe Soho. Son style est un mélange de sculpture, de design et d’architecture.

Gillick se rend au Japon en 2000 et il est professeur invité du projet de recherche CCA. Il utilise alors des bancs, des tables, des étagères et des lanternes japonaises pour décorer les parties communes. Peu de temps après, on lui confie la création d’une nouvelle pièce pour la cour de la galerie Clore. Là encore, il utilise des bancs, des tables, des étagères et des éclairages pour créer son projet. Local Discussion Screen est un exemple de son travail. Cette œuvre représente des panneaux rouges lumineux fixés sur une ossature métallique. C’est une grande pièce architecturale à la qualité industrielle. En 2002, la première grande exposition solo importante de l’artiste a lieu à la galerie Whitechapel Art de Londres. L’exposition propose des œuvres en bois, dont un labyrinthe grandeur nature.

La même année, Gillick est nominé pour le prix Turner pour son plafond composé de verre coloré et de feuilles d’acrylique. Il réalise également des publications sur papier et on lui confie la conception d’une série de posters pour le London Underground Platform for Art program et Frieze Art Fair. En 2007, le métro de Londres l’engage pour créer la couverture de la carte du métro, distribuée à plus de 15 millions de personnes. Intitulée The Day Before, la couverture représente la date qui précède le jour de la mise en circulation du métro, en douze couleurs distinctes correspondant aux douzes lignes du métro. En octobre 2010, il rejoint des artistes pour protester contre les coupes dans le financement public pour l’art. Gillick travaille dans de nombreux domaines, comme la sculpture, la gravure, l’architecture, la conception graphique, le cinéma et la musique. Il compose des morceaux de musique pour le film Beijing et participe à Ryan's Bar, le projet de Ryan Gander (britannique, né en 1976). Il travaille actuellement à l’université de Columbia à New York.
