Fortin was born in Sainte-Rose, Quebec and studied under Edward Dyonett and Ludger Larose in Montreal, and later at the Art Institute in Chicago, and in New York and Boston. His style was influenced by both the Group of Seven and Fauvism. Fortin became one of the best-known painters in Quebec in the years following World War II and his paintings command ever increasing prices in a very active secondary market. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musee d’Art Contemporain. It is interesting to note that when General DeGualle made a presidential visit to Canada in 1967, the Canadian Government gave him a painting by Fortin.
