Olafur Eliasson (danois, né le 15 février 1967 à Copenhague) crée des expériences sensorielles qui mettent en évidence l’interaction entre le spectateur, l’objet et son environnement. Son intérêt pour les cinq sens et la façon dont ils nous guident à travers des expériences est évident et cohérent à travers toute sa carrière. En 2003, Eliasson reproduit des éléments de la nature dans The Weather Project, projet installé dans le Turbine Hall de la Tate Modern de Londres qui attire plus de deux millions de visiteurs.

Il étudie à la Royal Academy of Arts de Copenhague de 1989 à 1995. Ensuite, il ouvre le studio Olafur Eliasson à Berlin, un laboratoire pour la création artistique et la recherche spatiale. En ajoutant des éléments comme le brouillard, l’eau, la lumière et des surfaces réflectives à des espaces ouverts, les projets et les installations d’Eliasson créent des expériences inattendues qui démontrent les qualités éphémères de notre environnement. En 1997, Your sun machine s’intéresse au laps de temps déterminé par la distance entre le soleil et la terre. Les spectateurs entrent dans une pièce dont le plafond possède un trou afin de rendre compte de la progression de la lumière du soleil tout au long de la journée.

Eliasson insiste sur l’importance du public ainsi que sa présence, s’adressant souvent directement à lui à travers le titre de ses œuvres. En 2009, Eliasson explore la lumière de différentes façons dans Your atmospheric colour atlas, exposé au musée d’art contemporain du XXIe siècle de Kanazawa au Japon. En remplissant l’espace de brouillard et de couleurs, l’artiste invite les visiteurs à se fondre dans le spectre en mélangeant la couleur pour leurs propres interprétations.

L’artiste vit et travaille actuellement à Berlin où il est professeur à l’université des arts. Son studio emploie désormais plus de 40 personnes, parmi lesquelles des artistes, des architectes, des scientifiques et des techniciens. Cependant, ses efforts s’étendent au-delà du monde de l’art. Il lance le projet Little Sun en 2012, après avoir travaillé en tant qu’ingénieur, pour développer des lumières alimentées par l’énergie solaire pour des zones qui ont un accès minimal à l’électricité.

Eliasson reçoit de nombreuses récompenses tout au long de sa carrière, dont la plus récente est le prix Eugene McDermott du MIT de Cambridge. Ses œuvres sont présentées dans des collections privées et publiques à travers le monde, notamment le Guggenheim Museum de New York, le musée d’art contemporain de Los Angeles et la Tate Modern de Londres.
