Peter Beard (américain, né le 22 janvier 1938 à New York) est un photographe et un écrivain célèbre pour ses travaux de collage et ses nombreux journaux personnels. Voyageant entre Long Island, New York City, et l’Alabama pendant sa jeunesse, Beard commence à écrire des journaux intimes qui vont plus tard servir de matériaux de base pour ses travaux de collage. Beard documente ses voyages et photographies à l’intérieur de ses journaux depuis l’âge de 12 ans, peu de temps avant son premier voyage en Afrique en 1955. En 1957, Beard postule pour devenir étudiant en médecine à Yale avant de s’orienter vers l’histoire de l’art, étudiant sous l’égide de l’influent théoricien et historien d’art historien Joseph Albers (1888-1976). Après son diplôme, Beard retourne au Kenya et s’installe en Afrique de l’Est en faisant l’acquisition de Hog Ranch, une propriété près de Ngong Hills adjacente à celle de Karen Blixen, l’auteur de Out of Africa.

Au début des années 1960, il travaille au parc national Tsavo où il photographie et relate la disparition des éléphants et des rhinocéros noirs et publie de nombreux livres sur le sujet. Pendant cette période, il commence à réaliser des collages photographiques qui explorent l’interconnexion entre les humains et les animaux. En parallèle à son propre travail, Beard se lie d’amitié et collabore avec de nombreux artistes comme Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), Richard Lindner (1901-1978), Terry Southern, Truman Capote et Francis Bacon (1909-1992). Non seulement il travaille avec des artistes de renom, il photographie des personnalités politiques, des mannequins, des stars de rock et des célébrités de New York entre les années 1970 et les années 1980. Après son exposition en 1975 à la galerie Blum Helman, Beard continue d’exposer son travail dans des galeries à Paris, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo et des villes à travers l’Afrique.

1938   Born in New York City, raised in New York City, Alabama, and Bayberry Point, Islip, Long Island, Peter Beard kept diaries at an early age.
1950   He took his first pictures and photography quickly evolved into an extension of his diaries, as a way to preserve and remember vacations and favorite things.
1955   First trip to Africa.
1957   Peter entered Yale University as a pre-medical student, but perceiving humans as the main disease soon switched to art history, studying under Vincent Scully, Joseph Albers, and Richard Lindner.
1960   Second trip to Africa, which piqued his interests. In the early 60s he worked at Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, during which time he photographed and documented the demise of over 35,000 elephants and 5000 Black Rhinos and published two The End of the Game books (1965 & 1977).
1966   Works with The Nuffield Unit of Tropical Ecology on a population dynamics study of elephants and hippopotamuses
1966 - 1968   Collaborates with Alistair Graham on crocodile study at Lake Rudolf for Kenya game department; later to become the basis of Eyelids of Morning– The Mingled Destines of Crocodiles and Men
1975   His first exhibit at the Blum Helman Gallery in New York.
1977   First one man show and landmark installation of his photographs, elephant carcasses, burned diaries, taxidermy, African artifacts, books and personal memorabilia at the International Center of Photography in New York City.
1996   Shortly after he was skewered and trampled by an elephant, his first major retrospective opened at the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, followed by other exhibits in Berlin, London, Toronto, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo and Vienna.
1998   50 Years of Portraits opens at Gallery One in Toronto; Canada Stress and Density opens at Camera Works, Berlin -Peter Beard art works exhibited at Paris Photo; Peter Beard works exhibited at the photo exhibition Under/Exposed, Stockholm, Sweden
2007   Lives in New York City, Montauk Point, and Kenya with his wife Nejma and daughter Zara.
