L’artiste britannique Tracey Emin (américaine, née le 3 juillet 1963 à Croydon), membre des Young British Artists, est surtout connue pour ses installations autobiographiques et ses œuvres multimédias. Emin étudie au Maidstone College of Art et au Royal College of Art dans sa ville natale. Aux côtés de l’artiste Sarah Lucas (britannique, 1962), Emin ouvre The Shop en 1993, où elles exposent et vendent leurs œuvres. L’année suivante, Emin présente sa première exposition, effrontément appelée My Major Rétrospective – Ma Grande Exposition – et expose son travail plusieurs années durant dans une galerie appelée The Tracey Emin Museum.

Le travail d’Emin ainsi que ses représentations publiques sont souvent provocatrices et autoréférentielles. Des œuvres allant d’installations de phrases en néon jusqu’à la peinture, la photographie, les films en passant par la performance et les tapisseries brodées à la main, elle illustre souvent ses propres expériences et émotions dans des relations intimes et intenses avec le spectateur. Son œuvre intitulée Everyone I Have Ever Slept With, 1963-1995 évoque chaque personne à côté de qui elle ait dormi, de ses amants à sa famille jusqu’à ses propres enfants à venir. Un travail similaire intitulé My Bed est une installation de son lit, recouvert de préservatifs, de tâches et de cigarettes, tel qu’il apparaît lors d’une période de traumatisme émotionnel, évoquant les émotions humaines les plus essentielles et universelles. Alors qu’elle reçoit une attention importante de la part de la critique, les présentations franches de son travail et son personnage public renvoient à la fois une image positive et négative au public. En 1999, elle est nommée pour le prix Turner er représente la Grande-Bretagne à la Biennale de Venise en 2004. Emin vit et travaille actuellement à Londres.
