Urs Fischer (suisse, né en 1973) est un artiste contemporain connu pour ses monumentales sculptures et installations, réalisées à partir d’une grande variété de matériaux provenant de la culture populaire. Né à Zurich, Fischer étudie la photographie à la Schule für Gestaltung avant de changer d’orientation pour créer des objets de la vie de tous les jours. Ses créations vont de la construction de la Bread House (2004–2006), maison en miches de pain, à la fabrication de Lamp/Bear (2005–2006), gigantesque ours en peluche coupé en deux par une toute aussi gigantesque lampe de bureau.

Fischer s’intéresse avant tout au processus de création et de destruction des matériaux qu’il emploie dans ses œuvres. Dans son installation What if the phone rings (2003), des bougies grandeur nature en formes de femmes nues, se consument au fur et à mesure de l’exposition, provoquant une transformation progressive de l’installation. La volonté de Fischer est de repousser toujours plus loin les frontières du raisonnable pour créer des spectacles uniques, voire choquants. Il atteint son point d’orgue avec You, œuvre pour laquelle il réalise l’excavation du sol de sa galerie Gavin Brown’s Enterprise. Son travail a été exposé à la Biennale de Venise en 2003, 2005 et 2007, ainsi que lors d’une exposition solo au Centre Pompidou de Paris et à la Kunsthaus de Zürich en Suisse. Fischer est artiste en résidence au Delfina Studios à Londres ; il vit et travaille à New York.
