Walasse Ting (américano-chinois, né le 13 octobre 1929 à Shanghaï – décédé le 17 mai 2010 à New York), artiste visuel et poète, attire l’attention de la critique et du public grâce à ses œuvres colorées qui mélangent style oriental et style occidental. Né en Chine, Walasse étudie pendant une courte période à la Shanghai Art Academy, mais s’étant toujours considéré comme autodidacte, il apprend à dessiner à la craie dans la rue dès son plus jeune âge. En 1952, il vit à Paris et se rapproche du groupe d’avant-garde COBRA.

En 1958, il s’installe à New York durant la grande période du mouvement expressionniste abstrait et du Pop art. Ses œuvres passent d’abstractions en noir et blanc qui rappellent celles de Zao Wou-ki (franco-chinois, 1921-2013) à des œuvres figuratives colorées et audacieuses qui mélangent calligraphie et couleurs. Sa série de femmes nues illustre son goût pour les couleurs vives occidentales. Il se lie d’amitié avec Sam Francis (américain, 1923-1994), qui l’aide à publier 1 Cent Life (1964), un livre des poésies de Walasse illustré, entre autres, par Karel Appel (hollandais, 1921-2006), Jim Dine (américain, né en 1935), Andy Warhol (américain, 1928-1987) et Francis. Walasse reçoit la bourse Guggenheim dans la catégorie dessin en 1970. Vers la fin de sa vie, Walasse partage sa vie entre New York et Amsterdam. Ses œuvres figurent parmi de nombreux musées tels que le Met et le musée Guggenheim de New York, la Tate Modern de Londres et le Centre Pompidou de Paris.
