William Eggleston  (American, 1939)

William Eggleston (américain, né le 27 juillet 1939 à Memphis) est un photographe qui contribue à faire de la photographie couleur une forme d’art vénérée. Né et élevé dans le sud des États-Unis, Eggleston est le fils d’un ingénieur et d’un juge local. Il passe son enfance à dessiner, jouer du piano et bricoler l’électronique. Eggleston s’amuse à découper des images dans des magazines, rechercher des cartes postales et voue une passion pour les médias visuels. Il fréquente un pensionnat durant son adolescence, puis passe un an à l’université Vanderbilt. Il poursuit ses études au Delta State College, qui retient son intérêt pendant un semestre. Il étudie ensuite pendant cinq ans à l’université du Mississippi, mais ne parvient pas à décrocher son diplôme. Eggleston en profite pour s’intéresser à la photographie.

Son travail avec la photographie couleur commence en 1965 quand il rencontre William Christenberry (américain, né en 1936). En 1960, Eggleston s’intéresse à la transparence de la couleur en tant que médium principal et qu’il utilisera durant toute sa carrière. En 1973 et 1974, Eggleston est enseignant à l’université d’Harvard. Il découvre le processus de transfert de colorant et grâce à des experiences, il développe des œuvres telles que The Red Ceiling en 1973. En 1976, son travail est exposé au MoMA de New York.

Tout au long des années suivantes, Eggleston publie un certain nombre de portfolios, dont Election Eve (1976), The Morals of Vision (1978) et Troubled Waters (1980). Par ailleurs, Eggleston photographed le tournage de plusieurs films comme Annie et True Stories en 1986. Il réalise aussi des pochettes d’albums pour des groupes tels que Big Star, Alex Chilton, Primal Scream et Christopher Idylls. En 2003, Eggleston publie Los Alamos, qui regroupe ses œuvres de 1966 à 1974. Il fait également quelques apparitions dans les médias, un caméo dans le film Great Balls of Fire et dans une publicité pour Marc Jacobs. Eggleston vit et travaille actuellement à Memphis dans le Tennessee.
