William Kentridge (sud-africain, né à Johannesburg en 1955), à la fois réalisateur, dessinateur et sculpteur, est le fils de Sydney Kentridge, l’un des plus grands avocats anti-apartheid d’Afrique du Sud. Après des études de politique et d’histoire africaine à l’université de Witwatersrand de Johannesburg entre 1973 et 1976, Kentridge étudie les Beaux-Arts à la Johannesburg Art Foundation de 1976 à 1978 et à l’École Jacques Lecoq de Paris. Son goût pour le théâtre, particulièrement pour le jeu et le design, influence son style artistique et lui donne l’envie de lier films et dessins. Ces derniers requérant l’utilisation de pastels et de fusain sont souvent utilisées pour des films d’animation.

Son travail est également inspire par des artistes satiriques, notamment Honoré Daumier (français, 1808–1879), Francisco de Goya (espagnol, 1746-1828) et William Hogarth (anglais, 1697-1764). Dans les années 1990, Kentridge jouit d’une renommée internationale et d’un public à travers le monde. Ses œuvres sont exposées dans de nombreux musées, entre autres, le MoMA de New York, le musée Albertina de Vienne, le musée d’Art Moderne de San Francisco et le musée d’Art de Philadelphia. Depuis les années 1980, Kentridge a reçu de nombreuses récompenses, telles que le prix Kaiserring, le prix Carnegie Prize, le Standard Bank Young Artist Award et le Red Ribbon Award pour les courts-métrages. Il vit et travaille à Johannesburg en Afrique du Sud.
