Zhang Dali (chinois, né en 1963 à Harbin) étudie à l’Académie d’Art et de Design de Pékin. À la fin de ses études, il voyage en Italie où il découvre l’art du graffiti. Dans les années 1990, il est le seul artiste graffeur de Pékin. Dali devient célèbre pour les 2 000 profils géants de lui-même qu’il crée un peu partout dans Pékin entre 1995 et 1998. Les profils de sa tête chauve sont placés intentionnellement à côté des caractères chai peints par les autorités de la ville pour indiquer une démolition. Ces images sont devenues le sujet d’un débat médiatique en 1998.

De 2003 à 2005, Zhang réalise 100 sculptures en résine à taille humaine représentant des travailleurs immigrés dans différentes postures. Chaque sculpture comporte un numéro, la signature de l’artiste et le titre Chinese Offspring, tatoués sur chaque corps. Suspendues la tête en bas, ces œuvres se font l’écho de la fragilité et de l’incertitude de la vie et soulignent le manque de pouvoir de ces travailleurs immigrés pour changer leur destinée. Outre Keith Haring (américain, 1958-1990) et Jackson Pollock (américain, 1912-1956), Zhang est l’un de seuls artistes à faire la couverture de Time magazine. Il expose son travail au Centre international de la photographie à New York, à la galerie Courtyard à Pékin, à l’Institut d’Art Contemporain de Londres et au Kunstnernes Hus d’Oslo. En 2006, Zhang participe à la Biennale Gwangju en Corée. Il vit et travaille à Pékin.
