Barbier demonstrates his mastery of fashion illustration in this classic Art Deco almanac featuring whimsical interpretations of styles “past, present and future,” from eighteenth century robes à l’anglaise, to primitive costumes, to cutting edge evening gowns embellished with exotic trimmings and embroidery. In many of his designs, Barbier plays with folklore and mythology, updating classical stories by illustrating them in contemporary environments, as with “le Jugement de Paris,” pictured above. Interior settings are rendered with a great attention to detail as are garden scenes, featuring elaborate topiaries, fountains and other outdoor amusements.
