Lee nam Lee draws upon art historical images and through the use of digital technology and his creativity offers a new interpretation
of them as works of art.
In the work A Conversation between Monet and Sochi Lee nam Lee projects the image of a classic painting from the western
tradition by Claude Monet (1840-1926) and an ink painting from the eastern tradition by Korean artist Sochi (1803-1893) side by
side showing their different styles. Then he brings the paintings to life causing them to change and interact. Seasons change and
day turns to night. The fisherman in the Monet sails into the Sochi, the island in the Sochi emerges in the Monet, and the sun from
the Monet sets in the Sochi, while Lee nam introduces into these 19th century landscapes images of a modern city skyline with
lighted buildings and a gentle snow fall. The result is visual poetry.
In addition to A Conversation between Monet and Sochi, several other digital works will be shown in what is his first solo museum
exhibition in the United States.
Born in 1969 at Damyang, Korea, Lee nam Lee holds a B.F.A. and MFA, from Chosun University, Gwangju, Korea and a D.F.A. from
Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. He has exhibited in over 200 solo and group exhibitions in Korea as well as New York, Beijing,
Germany, and Washington, DC. His work is in numerous public and private collections worldwide. Lee currently resides in Gwangju,
Korea.
