George Edward Robertson was a fine Victorian artist who exhibited regulary at the Royal Academy. This work depicts the people gathering around the well to discuss stories and gather water. The light shines down on the figures by the well and then the picture as a whole is framed by the archway. A figure walks towards us after gathering water and by the side a man watches the people, hoping for some sales. Robertson has used a heavy loaded brush to re create the sense of the stonework.
