Miami, solo exhibit at PULSE Contemporary Art Fair announced for
JUSTIN ORVIS STEIMER
Dec. 5-8, 2013

Exhibit includes two large works on sewn boat sails from the 1960s Steimer’s first portrait, and a series of watercolors infused with the spirit of Europe

Tinca Art, led by owner and curator Catinca Tabacaru, announced today the new solo exhibit of artist Justin Orvis Steimer, opening December 5, 2013, at Pulse Miami Contemporary Art Fair in Miami Beach.

Justin Orvis Steimer is a 32-year old American abstract painter. He works primarily on salvaged materials ranging from linen and boat sails, which he cuts and sews into canvases, to pieces on inanimate objects that find their way into his life. These objects, and the cutting, sewing, and stretching of materials into large, geometric canvases, are just as much a part of the work as the painting itself; their natural characteristics informing each step of the process. The first layer of shapes informs the next as Steimer connects and breaks down space. The final layer could not exist without those first strokes, whether resembling them or not, nor could it exist without the base.

When he paints, he focuses his attention on the space, the object, or the person the painting depicts, absorbing its energy and translating it into his ever-evolving abstract vocabulary. As Steimer has said: “By opening the mind to allow the surrounding energy, time, space, thought, location and emotion to pass freely through the body, a visual documentation of life at the moment is recorded.”

At PULSE Miami this December, Steimer is up for the Pulse Prize given out to one emerging artist showing incredible future potential. For the competition, Tinca Art presents three large works and a series of small watercolors on paper. Two of the large works are painted on boat sails from the 1960s and executed in the artist’s studio. They reflect his exploration of space, line and shape. The third is Steimer’s first portrait made on a lover’s favorite sheets and a scarf from her most beloved place in the world. He interwove the materials to build his canvas and proceeded to paint her soul, as his muse spent three weeks frolicking in his studio. The result is a radiant burst of light and the inscription of the woman’s Hebrew name within the piece… Steimer not having know she had such a name. The watercolors are a collection hailing from a summer spent in Europe, each depicting the sensations of a variety of spaces in Germany, France, Switzerland and Romania.

The Press and VIP Lunch takes place from 9am to noon on Thrusday, December 5, 2013.
