CONNY DIETZSCHOLD GALLERY presents LISA JONES during ART WALK
Invisible Cities explores systems of communication through a myriad of motifs. Motifs include maps which communicate city networks, coral communicating the system of the ocean and human organs communicating the complex networks of the body. Using layers of paper manipulated by scorched laser cutting, water colour paints, acrylic sculptures and pencil work, Jones transforms these networks into a series of ambiguous shapes and forms. Human lungs breathe life into a London bus route map, intestines trace around the arteries of city maps from Zurich and brain neurons transmit signals throughout a Madrid map.
Organs and cities fuse together to form new realities, as Lisa Jones points out “Maps of cities and images of healthy organs constitutes ideals and yet unhealthy organs and chaotic effects are part of reality; order is a matter of degree.” Jones’ subtle use of colour and delicate laser cutting add a beautiful, poetic interpretation of images of diseased organs and chaotic cities.
Jones enjoys playing with the Renaissance idea of the ‘microcosm and macrocosm,’ from the anatomical to entomological, the inside and outside. Jones uses these to create intricate patterns. As the title suggests, Invisible Cities touches upon the unseen impact and infusion of our surrounding systems and networks upon ourselves and in turn makes one reflect upon their own reality.
