Transparencies, an exhibition of recent drawings on Mylar by Richard Serra, will be on view at Craig F. Starr Gallery from October 26 through December 15, 2012. Richard Serra, who is known for his unparalleled, large scale sculptures, has continually turned to drawing throughout his career. A catalogue of the exhibition, which includes an essay by Richard Shiff, will be available.
This is Serra’s first show at Craig F. Starr Gallery. The exhibition includes fifteen drawings all executed in 2012. The series was created with a new process that includes using three sheets of Mylar (a type of transparent, plastic sheeting). Serra coats the underside of one sheet and the top side of another sheet with a lithographic crayon. These are then "sandwiched" together with the third, untouched sheet in the middle, so the lithographic crayon is enclosed in between the sheets of Mylar. He then uses a drawing tool to press the work together to transfer the drawing to middle sheet on both sides. The resulting work is a litho crayon drawing on the recto and verso of one sheet of Mylar.
