Jarmo Mäkilä: Masculine Ventriloquism
August 2 – August 25, 2013

Welcome to the opening reception in the presence of the artists, Thursday, August 1, 5-7 pm.

Galerie Forsblom will open the fall season with an exhibition of Jarmo Mäkilä, commemorating the artist's 40-year career. The exhibition is a continuation of the Helsinki City Art Museum’s 2008 exhibition, Men’s Room, as well as the 2012 Pori Art Museum exhibition, Games for Boys. Mäkilä’s works on display at Galerie Forsblom’s Masculine ventriloquism exhibition examine the moment at which childhood ends, and the innocence of childhood begins to falter.

The exhibition consists of highly charged paintings, installations, and bronze sculptures, which illuminate the memories and emotions associated with childhood. In his paintings, Mäkilä beholds his inner child with adult eyes and, in so doing, opens doors previously closed to himself. The works allow the viewer to observe collective layers of childhood memories, as Professor Altti Kuusamo says: 'Mäkilä’s paintings pin up boyhood memories to be interpreted through the thick layer of the present. History is 'out there', and we can grasp it only by forming our own interpretation of it in the present moment.'
