Welcome to the opening reception
in the presence of the artists,
Thursday, March 14, 5-7 pm.
Jenni Hiltunen (born 1981) seeks out recurrent and catchy visuals within our age’s infinite photo repository. Her new paintings are generated from the random bizarre poses and fashion world phenomena that recur throughout the internet’s flood of images.
Hiltunen's paintings exist in the present moment. The artist is fascinated by the Internet’s inexhaustible supply of material – the oddness and absurdity of topics discussed in blogs, message boards, and social networks. While artists and models change within the stream of internet pictures, the same poses are repeated endlessly. Hiltunen’s bold brush strokes transform the banal into new breaks of commonly accepted moulds. The compositions and poses are familiar to us, but the figure itself remains unknown. In place of recognizable facial features are rough layers of colour and feeling.
