On September 10, 2011, acclaimed American artist Alex Katz will unveil a major new suite of paintings in his first exhibition at Gavin Brown’s enterprise. The group of thirteen canvases, of somber portraits and flower-strewn fields, will comprise the artist’s first show in New York in two years.

The exhibition will remain on view through October 8th and will be accompanied by a catalogue.

Since his emergence in the mid-1950s alongside the New York School of painters and poets, Alex Katz has become one of the most influential and enduring figures in the American cultural landscape. By bringing the insights and discipline of abstract painting to such traditional subject matter as sylvan landscapes and monochrome city views, and portraits of family and friends, Katz has crafted a singularly taut, deft approach to both the act of painting and the art of chronicling American society of his time. In this sense, the artist belongs uniquely to two worlds that rarely mingle so completely: abstraction and figuration, the purely visual and the insistently narrative.

The curve of a cheek telegraphs the ethos of a moment. But in a Katz portrait that curve also is rendered with the perfect, muscular economy and heroic scale of great Minimalist sculpture. With Alex Katz, abstraction is so cleverly disguised that we feel the exquisite tension in his work without our quite knowing why.

The deceptively simple effect of Katz’s achievement is so over-arching that his presence, his style, and his vision are ubiquitous; his genius hides in plain sight. He has defined our Post-War gaze, and we have gladly seen the world through his eyes. Now, as the ‘The American Century’ ends and we reassess it in hindsight, Katz's resolute fidelity to truth in beauty is more powerful than ever. It is as profound and timeless as it is contemporary and essential; it is perhaps our most American art.
