Brooklyn-based sculptor Itamar Jobani is recognized for the conceptual lucidity of his work. Jobani's latest series is informed by a conceptual framework reinventing and subverting the magnum opus of German photographer August Sander, People of the 20th Century, 1911-1950. Sander aspired to map and quantify his sociocultural environs via societal "archetypes" (ex: The Policeman, The Farmer, The Urbanite). On its centenary, Jobani employs mirror, aluminum, resin, clay, and found objects to resurrect Sander's project. He updates it to reflect the complexities of the 21st C., with an eye to the dual utopian and absurd underpinnings of Sander's endeavor.
