“WassinkLundgren playfully turn the unwritten rules of photography upside down. But behind the joke is always a serious attempt to expand both the artistic as well as the social significance of their medium” – Frits Gierstberg, Dutch Photo Museum

Pékin Fine Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of selected works by WassinkLundgren, the Dutch collaboration between Thijs groot Wassink (1981) and Ruben Lundgren (1983). WassinkLundgren live and work in both London (Wassink) and Beijing (Lundgren). Singles is WassinkLundgren’s second solo exhibition at Pékin Fine Arts.

WassinkLundgren experiment with the retrospective exhibition genre in this presentation of their work to-date, using one “Single” image from each of 12 projects completed since starting their collaboration shortly after the classmates graduated from the Utrecht School of Arts in the Netherlands. In this 2nd solo exhibit at Pékin Fine Arts, the artists subvert traditional retrospectives, by stringing seemingly random solitary images together. Implicitly inviting viewers to decide for themselves, whether the “Singles” coalescence into a coherent stream or diverge along new and surprising conceptual paths.
WassinkLundgren first came to international attention after their Empty Bottles photo book won the “Best Contemporary Photobook of the Year” prize at Arles Photo Festival in 2007. The Empty Bottles photo book is a collection of street shots on collecting and recycling plastic bottles, shot in Beijing and Shanghai, and designed by Dutch graphic designers Kummer & Herrman in collaboration with the artists. Since the beginning, WassinkLundgren photo work is accompanied by strong photo book design in nearly all their projects, most recently, working on various photo book projects with Beijing based graphic artists, Undesign Studio.
Recent WassinkLundgren photo projects include This Land is Your Land, This Land Is My Land (2011-2012) a still life record of Amsterdam’s most expensive real estate parcels; and, Tokyo, Tokyo, (2010), a series of ‘decisive moment’ diptychs shot on the streets of Tokyo’s busy neighborhoods.
In January 2013, WassinkLundgren will have their first European museum solo exhibition, at FOAM, Amsterdam’s preeminent museum of contemporary photography.
