Edmondo di Robilant and Marco Voena are pleased to announce an exhibition of ten recent paintings by Julian Schnabel, which will take place at their London gallery between the 20th of October and the 19th of November.

R+V will show a representative selection of works executed since 2000, illustrating Schnabel’s own unique extrovert expressionism combined with a myriad of influences. His instinctive attraction to different materials is evident in heavily worked canvases where a mix of paint and wax creates luscious visceral surfaces. His passion for variegated mediums is matched by his desire to work on a monumental scale - the paintings on show range from seven to fourteen feet in height. Their size envelops the viewer and fills our peripheral vision.

Among the portraits exhibited (including Stephanie Seymour and Lizzy Jagger) is Untitled(Girl with No Eyes) from the famous 2001 ‘Big Girl Paintings’ series. From Schnabel’s latest production R+V will show a work from the 2003 ‘Chinese Painting’ series (Untitled, Vertical Chinese Girl) and others from the 2004 ‘Japanese’ series (e.g. Untitled, Blue Japanese Girl) where on smooth backgrounds the artist explores Asian mysteries. The iconography becomes abstract and creates a sense of order. Conversely, in his 2005 ‘Sonanbul’ series (Sonanbul #2 and #3), Schnabel marries figuration and abstraction. Here, a word, a frame and a reclining female figure create an unexpected harmony.

Schnabel’s paintings convey a certain Baroque awe; their outlandish compositions, as well as their bold and ornate decoration simply stop us in our tracks. A magnetic suggestiveness draws the viewer in - it is impossible not to feel seduced.

Born in 1951 in New York, Schnabel had his first solo exhibition in 1979. Since then, his rise has been meteoric. His work can be found in major collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA; the Metropolitan Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Tate, London and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. The present exhibition will be his first solo show in London for over six years.

Edmondo di Robilant and Marco Voena opened their new gallery at 38 Dover Street in January 2005, having been active in the Old Master paintings field for over twenty years. Alongside this they have exhibited contemporary art and such exponents of classic modernism as Lucio Fontana, Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol amongst others.
