Biographie
1824 Born on May 11th
1841 Went to Paris, France and worked under Paul Delaroche
1844 - 1845 Accompanied Paul Delaroche to Italy
1847 Third-class medal for The Cockfight, Salon of 1847
1848 Second- class medal for his paintings The Virgin, the Infant Jesus and St John, and Anacreon, Bacchus and Cupid , Salon of 1848
1851 Decorated a vase that was later offered by Emperor Napoleon III of France to Prince Albert, now part of the Royal Collection at St. James's Palace, London
1852 Received a commission by Alfred Emilien Comte de Nieuwerkerke, Surintendant des Beaux-Arts to the court of Napoleon III, for the painting of a large historical canvas, the Age of Augustus image of the painting.
1853 Traveled to Constantinople
1854 Made a journey to Turkey and the shores of the Danube
1854 Completed a commission of decorating the Chapel of St. Jerome in the church of St. Séverin, Paris, France
1856 Visited Egypt for the first time
1858 Helped to decorate the Paris house of Prince Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte
1865 Elected a member of the Institut de France
1867 Already a knight in the Légion d'honneur, he was promoted to an officer
1869 Elected an honorary member of the British Royal Academy
1869 He was invited, along with the most eminent French artists, to the opening of the Suez Canal
1904 Died in his atelier on January 10th
