Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Benjamin Britton. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, January 14, 4-6 PM.

For this exhibition, Benjamin Britton brings together a series of oil paintings that present particular scenarios, using a seamless combination of representation and abstraction. Britton’s interest in the dynamic between people, culture and nature and the individual’s role in navigating this space drives the tension, beauty, marks, gestures, content and other formal decisions in his work.

Britton’s works, brimming with eruptive painterly energy, are spurred by a reconciliation of romantic impulse and raw, cataclysmic reality. Each painting contains a flood of paint and imagery that shift between luxurious sensuality and sobering turbulence; extreme delicacy and propulsive force; pure gesture and representation. Britton draws his images from personal experience, memory and fantasy, conjuring layers of interpretation. Sweeping movements of paint, along with references to landscape, nature, fabric and personal iconography, collect in a highly charged narrative crest.

“These paintings are about my perspectives on the relationship between people, nature, and culture seen through the lens of ecstatic, climactic, and otherwise “perfect” moments. I’m interested in the agency of individuals in the apprehension and definition of the sublime, and how people both perform and rebel against their culture and sub-culture in their interactions with the natural world...Although I’m engaged in describing the elements present within a specific scenario, that situation becomes so veiled by the prevailing conditions within each painting that the conditions themselves become the main subject.”

Benjamin Britton received his MFA from UCLA in 2008 and his BFA from School of Visual Arts in New York. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
