Ruth Bachofner is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Seiko Tachibana. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, December 1, 4-7 p.m.

Seiko Tachibana creates works on paper that align abstraction and natural forms. The idea of connectivity and creating unified wholes from smaller pieces has been a recurring and central theme throughout her career. Cellular, biological and artistic structures are explored metaphorically and physically through her process.

Seiko Tachibana engages a graphic language of dots, lines, patterns and other nature-based mark-making. Like snapshots of cells dividing and organisms forming, delicate, intuitive marks and scratches splay delicately across her surfaces. Watery and cellular shapes are massed with intricate line drawings of non-specific plant-like forms which bare resemblance to seaweed or lichen, plant veins or nerve cells. These interactions occur on spare, muted backgrounds of clean, buff paper mounted on panel. The works impart the sense of a slow organic process whose floating, mutating motion has been suspended and magnified.

Seiko Tachibana was born in Osaka, Japan and attended Kobe University. She received her graduate degree in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and currently lives and works in the Bay Area. Her work is in numerous collections both in the United States and abroad including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, The Portland Museum and The Royal Museum of Fine Art, Antwerp.
