J. Thomas R. Higgins, featured in the side gallery, is a plein-air painter and he feels that it is an active and intuitive process of participating in natural spaces. He has a particular fascination with the visual complexity of bogs and what such ecosystems offer in his life-long pursuit to find the miraculous in the commonplace.
Higgins states " Although the works evolve perceptually (not from memory), I believe they are not solely recordings of objective information, but are also emotional performances influenced by accumulated memories and events. Fundamentally, I just love to push paint around. "
Higgins holds a MS and MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught in several institutions including Colby College, University of Maine, University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine, Farmington where he is Professor Emeritus.
