Charles Hinman: The Shape of Things    Oct 4 - Nov 13, 2013

Over the course of an artistic career now entering its fifth decade, Charles Hinman has maintained a steadfast interest in exploring three-dimensionality; his shaped canvases examine the elusive space of painting juxtaposed against the real space of sculpture. Hinman was born in Syracuse, New York in 1932 and studied at the Art Students League from 1955 to 1966. He first received attention for his participation in Sidney Janis Gallery's 7 New Artists exhibition in 1964, where his work hung alongside Larry Bell's and Robert Irwin's.

Writing for The Brooklyn Rail, reviewer Robert Morgan said Charles Hinman's paintings are "meant to exude feeling as one encounters them. They are the paradigms, if not the harbingers, of what it means when we communicate with an artist through a work of art." This will be the Gallery's first exhibition of works by the artist.
