As is traditional, the Galerie St. Etienne’s summer installation features RECENT ACQUISITIONS, and also recaps highlights of the past year’s exhibition program.

In its 2012-2013 season, the Galerie St. Etienne explored the field of self-taught art’s relationship to the mainstream, considered Austrian and German Expressionist portraiture, and, most notably, surveyed Egon Schiele’s representations of women in an exhibition timed to coincide with the publication of Co-Director Jane Kallir’s book on the same subject. This year’s RECENT ACQUISITIONS exhibition features wonderful works on paper by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele, prints by Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, and others, as well as important oils and works on paper by Marie-Louise Motesiczky. Works by such self-taught artists as Madge Gill, William Hawkins, Grandma Moses, Martin Ramirez, and Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern round out the show.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS is documented by a comprehensive checklist, which is available free of charge by mail, or can be downloaded from our website: The accompanying essay contains the Galerie St. Etienne’s annual “state of the market” report, which this year details how a narrow focus on profit by artists and auction houses alike has reverberated through and hypercommercialized the art world.
