In Gutheil's third solo exhibition with the gallery, the Boschian creatures of Die Beobachter (The Watchers) overtake their Baroque frames and invade the real world. The uneasy scenes and grotesque figures, whether fantastic animals or surreal half-humans, become distorted caricatures in a mysterious story. Incorporating patterned fabrics, found objects and different paints to achieve a range of textures and depths, the physicality of the materials--feathers, foils, skulls, dripping paint--further accentuate the odd nature of some of the creatures, composed of disparate limbs and body parts, as the mythological monsters of German folklore.
