Galleri Bo Bjerggaard’s artists in dialogue with J. F. Willumsen
The autumn season’s last big show at Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Recollections ‒ of Willumsen, will open on 2 November. For the exhibition, the gallery has asked a number of the artists it represents to enter into a dialogue with a selection of works by the Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863-1958).
The selections include a number of sketches and preliminary studies for some of Willumsen’s better known works, including Den grønne Pige [The Green Girl]and Sol og Ungdom [Sun and Youth]. Together, they illustrate the shift from the early 20th century vitalist view of people and art to the more symbolist direction of Willumsen’s subsequent works.
For the Recollections exhibition, nine of the gallery’s regular artists chose to work with respective Willumsen pieces. Participating artists Ivan Andersen (DK), Marcel van Eeden (NL), Federico Herrero (CR), Per Bak Jensen (DK), John Kørner (DK), Bo Christian Larsson (S), Jonathan Meese (DE), Daniel Richter (DE) and Erik Steffensen (DK) have been given a free hand, with the one stipulation that they should relate to a specific work of Willumsen.
This has resulted in a show that challenges one’s notion of Willumsen and makes one focus on other than the usual aspects of the artist’s work. By the same token, this has given the gallery’s artists the possibility of getting out of their habitual expressions and creating works that add a new dimension to their artistic efforts.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with text by painter Jesper Christiansen, who is deeply familiar with both Willumsen and the contemporary artists participating in the show.
