The Open-Minded Christmas Show     Nov 27 - Dec 20, 2012

The Open-Minded Christmas Show at the Bo Bjerggaard Gallery

In 1891 some witty fellows on the Copenhagen art scene decided to meet the public’s wish to keep up with developments in painting with The Open-Minded Christmas Show. It is doubtful whether the show ever came to fruition; it was more likely conceived from the start as pure Christmas satire on the contemporary art scene and especially the milieu around the newly established artists’ association The Free Exhibition [Den Frie Udstilling]. What we know for sure is that it survives in the Open-Minded Christmas Show Catalogue [Catalog over den fordomsfri juleudstilling], featuring coloured sketches of works by prominent names such as Vill. Ulmsen (Willumsen) and Hammerslav (Hammershøi). A copy of the catalogue can be seen in the Bo Bjerggaard Gallery’s critically acclaimed exhibition RECOLLECTIONS – of Willumsen.
Thus, the Bo Bjerggaard Gallery has seen fit to borrow the 1891 title for its own Open-Minded Christmas Show with salon hanging of minor works, including collage works by Jonathan Meese, new graphics by John Kørner and brand new drawings by Bo Christian Larsson. Works by Tal R, Brigitte Waldach, Eva Schlegel, Per Kirkeby, Per Bak Jensen, Stephan Balkenhol, Erik Steffensen and Peter Linde Busk will also be on display in the show, which opens on Tuesday, 27 November.
The Open-Minded Christmas Show is equipped with a cosy reading nook, where aside from taking a much needed break from the holiday rush, one can also dive into some great art publications and enjoy a good cup of tea, graciously sponsored by Tante T, the Gallery’s Hvide Kødby neighbor.
There will also be many good bargains to be found on all kinds of art books and graphic magazines at very open-minded prices, so there is every reason to come by Flæsketorvet 85A and perhaps even get some Christmas shopping done at the same time.
The Open-Minded Christmas Show – as well as the RECOLLECTIONS ‒ of Willumsen exhibition can be seen at the Bo Bjerggaard Gallery until 20 December, after which the Gallery will be closed until 7 Janaury. The New Year will bring yet another Bo Bjerggaard Gallery season with a double opening on Friday, 18 January, when Dutch artist Marcel van Eeden will be showing new works on paper, while contemporary German artist Cosima von Bonin will take over the large hall with a show about and with one of her great artistic influences, Poul Gernes.
