Welcome to the opening reception
in the presence of the artists,
Thursday, April 12, 5-7 pm.
Under the patronage of H.E. Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr. Huang Xing.
Chinese artist Chen Jiagang asks in his photographs if a camera can record emotions which are memories. Remembering as a process combines the moment with the past and with something physically lost, but Chen Jiagang is capable of forming overlapping temporal realities in his photographs.
Jiagang combines the Chinese countryside, industrial architecture and people in a way that calls into question China’s past and present. In his photographs he builds a complex and ambiguous tension between the foreground and the background – between the individual and society, the man and his environment. His works convey a concern about rapid economic growth and the effects of urbanization on morals in society and human relationships.
