Press Release

Hayato Matsushita: American Geomancy

October 14 – November 6, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, October 14, 6 – 9 PM
Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 11 – 6, Monday and Tuesday by appointment

The Christopher Henry Gallery is pleased to present American Geomancy, its third solo exhibition with Japanese-born, New York-based artist and cultural archeologist Hayato Matsushita. The exhibition is a continuation of the artist’s fascination with a range of subjects that include Freemasonry, America's founding fathers, history, design patterns and architecture. Through his investigations, Matsushita decodes certain unexplained phenomena, and examines the hidden symbolism of iconic landmarks and patterns of city planning in the national / cultural capital cities.

Freemasons encompass a range of faiths but require followers to believe in a supreme being. This fundamental principle of Unity informs much of Matsushita’s work, which is often represented with the recurring motif of the hexagram: a six pointed star, comprised of a union of two triangles. This vital symbol represents the union of two principles or forces: male and female, darkness and light, above and below, yin and yang and so on. The works of Geomancy connect with the power of an ancient tradition that aligns the resonance of our own bodies/minds/spirits with the universal spirit of the Earth. Geomancy is filled with intriguing, peculiar, and sometimes unsettling discoveries that cause the viewer to reassess their preconceived notions of the surrounding environment.
