From 1st May Amelia Johnson Contemporary in conjunction with Mandarin Oriental, Hong
Kong and ART HK12 is delighted to present a themed exhibition by the award winning Hong
Kong artist, Tang Kwok Hin. Conceived especially for exhibition in Mandarin Oriental, Hong
Kong’s iconic Clipper Lounge, “I Call you Nancy” is a site-specific installation based on the life
of the artist’s fictitious sister.
Using video and collage as mediums, Tang Kwok Hin weaves together 25 years of poignant
memories to create a life for a sister he never knew. The artist draws inspiration from images
commonly associated with the ‘ideal family’ and popularized by contemporary culture, film
and media. Hin uses Hong Kong, its local people, natural landscape, landmarks and institutions
as inspiration to construct beautiful, carefully layered works with poetic undertones.
Acknowledging the significance of Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong and the role that this hotel
has played in shaping Hong Kong and the lives of its people, the artist has devised this
installation not to draw attention to his own memories and experiences but uses personal
elements to construct a carefully curated context that draws the viewer inward and invites
them to reflect on their own history, experiences and memories. Framed between the windows
of the Clipper Lounge, these tiered glass and Perspex pieces of art will allow guests and
viewers a peek in to Nancy’s life.
Biography:
Tang Kwok Hin was born in 1984 and raised in Kam Tin, one of the last remaining walled
villages, in Hong Kong’s New Territories. It was during his undergraduate studies at the Chinese
University of Hong Kong, where he received his BA and MFA in Fine Art, that he became
fascinated by the relationship between nature and urban development in Hong Kong.
Through his work, Tang examines objects and images and how their meanings have been
altered by urbanisation and human development in the age of technology.
Tang Kwok Hin was awarded first prize at the Hong Kong Biennale in 2009 and the “40 Under 40
Recognition of Young Creative Talent Award” in 2010. In addition he was selected as a finalist
for the prestigious Asian Sovereign Art Foundation Prize in 2010 and 2011 and for the
international Arte Laguna Art Prize, Venice in 2011. Most recently, Tang was the recipient of
the 2010 Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) awarded in 2011 by the Hong Kong Arts
Development Council.
Tang Kwok Hin’s work is found in the collections of Deutsche Bank and the Hong Kong Museum
of Art as well as private collections in the United States, Australia, Germany, Singapore and
Hong Kong. He is an active curator and speaker and has participated in many cross-cultural
exchanges throughout Asia. He continues to attract great interest from international collectors
and curators alike and he is fast becoming one of the most talked about Hong Kong artists of
his generation, with a reputation for creating thought provoking work heavily infused with a
local flavour.

Founded in 2005 by Amelia Johnson, Amelia Johnson Contemporary has built up an enviable
reputation for presenting carefully curated exhibitions as well as selecting to showcase only
those artists possessing strong artistic vision and integrity. The gallery is dedicated to exhibiting
groundbreaking international contemporary art in Hong Kong and to promoting young Hong
Kong artists through spotlight exhibitions both in Hong Kong and overseas. The gallery has
