El próximo viernes 13 de enero se inaugura en camara oscura la primera exposición individual en España del colectivo de artistas estadounidenses Hillerbrand+Magsamen.
Los videos, fotografías, e instalaciones de Hillerbrand+Magsamen reinterpretan a la gente, sus acciones, y los objetos de su vida cotidiana, y se mueven en el filo de lo heroico y lo trágico. Navegan por las percepciones de identidad, emociones y familia desde una subjetividad típicamente norteamericana que curiosamente es perfectamente aplicable a cualquier otro hogar de nuestro mundo globalizado.
Su visión de la vida diaria de la familia de clase media es a la vez atrevida y reveladora:
“Nuestros proyectos de video experimental exploran las actividades diarias y las contradicciones en la vida de la familia suburbana. Utilizamos nuestra propia familia y nuestro hogar para crear los personajes y los escenarios con objeto de investigar las percepciones de la familia americana estándar sobre las emociones, interacciones, el consumerismo y los medios. ¿Podemos simultáneamente ser felices y desgraciados con nuestras vidas, amar y odiar nuestras posesiones materiales, sentir amor y odio por nuestra familia? Como artistas queremos cuestionar nuestras propias vidas y nuestra capacidad de resistencia. En eso reside nuestra fortaleza, en admitir la ambivalencia y la contradicción, y en cuestionar con valentía la vida, y a pesar de ello perseverar y continuar.”
En esta exposición presentaremos un conjunto de cinco videos que proporcionarán una visión de conjunto muy completa sobre el trabajo de Hillerbrand+Magsamen. Ellos han expuesto anteriormente en festivales de cine, galerías y museos a nivel internacional, incluyendo el Ann Arbor Film Festival, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, y el Houston Center for Photography. Asimismo les han sido concedidos un número de residencias y becas en relevantes centros de arte de EEUU.

Next Friday 13 January, the first solo exhibition in Spain of the American artist collective Hillerbrand+Magsamen opens at the camara oscura art gallery.
Hillerbrand+Magsamen’s videos, photographs and installations reinterpret the people, activities and objects of their everyday life and engage the edge between the heroic and tragic. They navigate perceptions of identity, emotion and family within a uniquely American subjectivity that curiously also applies to any household in this globalized world.
Their vision of the ordinary life of a middle-class family is both enlightening and daring:
“Our experimental video projects explore our relationship, family and everyday activities reflecting about the contradictions of suburban family life. We use our own family and home for the characters and set to playfully and poetically explore perceptions of the contemporary American family’s emotions, interactions, consumerism and media. Can we be simultaneously happy and sad with our lives, like and dislike our material possessions, feel love and hate for our family? As artists we are willing to question our own lives and the endurance within. That is the real strength, to admit the ambivalence and contradiction, to bravely question life, and then go on and recommit, in spite of it.”
On this exhibition we will present a complete set of five videoworks that will provide a full picture of Hillerbrand+Magsamen’s body ofwork. They have exhibited in film festivals, galleries and museums internationally including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, and HoustonCenter for Photography. They have also been awarded residencies as well as grants in major art centres in the USA.
