Fred Torres Collaborations is pleased to announce the exhibition Ji Dachun Splendid Isolation on view from August 2 through September 15, 2012. There will be an opening reception, Thursday, August 2, from 6 to 8 PM. The artist will be present. Co-curated by Daniel Lechner and Yana Balson, this is Ji Dachun’s first solo exhibition at the gallery and his first solo exhibition in the United States. Splendid Isolation will feature 9 new paintings and a selection of new drawings. A limited edition catalogue including an essay by Jonathan Goodman will be published on occasion of the exhibition. Fred Torres Collaborations is located at 527 West 29th Street, New York.

The delicate works in Splendid Isolation merge traditional Chinese painting and Western modernism to create abstract landscapes. Ji Dachun often references medical imagery, such as body scans and diagrams, in his paintings. Yet these images at times become abstracted into the landscapes on view, where bone becomes stone, and diagrams become organic lines. Jonathan Goodman writes about Ji Dachun’s work, “the title—As Scenery Disappears, We Disappear, gives us the truth of the image; it becomes clear that the work originates in a time when the environment is lost, and all that we possess is the hard, harsh bareness of stone. It seems we are looking at a damaged aspect of nature, which, interestingly, possesses a skeletal beauty linked to the mortality that is part of our awareness. Here, as happens frequently in the work of Ji Dachun, we look beyond the picture itself to establish a point of view that supports the image. “

Ji Dachun was born in Nantung, Jiangsu Provence, China (1968). He received a degree in painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. He currently lives and works in Beijing. Dachun’s work has been widely exhibited throughout Asia and Europe. Notably, his work has been the subject of several solo museum exhibitions including the Shanghai Art Museum, the Kunstmuseum Bern, and the Posco Art Museum (Seoul). Group shows include Injoy Museum of Art (Beijing), Center PasquArt (Switzerland), Ludwig Museum (Koblenz), SZ Art Center (Beijing), Lausanne Art Museum, Salzburg Modern Art Museum, Evangelische Studierendengemeinde (Dietrich – Bonhoeffer - Haus, Kassel), Shanghai Zenda MOMA. This will be the first exhibition of the work of Ji Dachun in the United States.
